About the event
In this Artisan Soap Making Class, owners Kevin and Michael Douglas-Smith will explain and demonstrate the basic chemistry, safety precautions and materials used when making cold process soap from scratch. You will then create and pour (under a controlled environment) cold-process soap batter, customize it with natural colorants and/or scents and decorate it with special textures. Handcrafted soap has to harden for 24 hours; so before you take them home, you can either come back in 1-2 days to slice your 4 bars of soap or we can slice your soap for you to pick up. We can also slice your soap and ship them to you. Price of the class does not include shipping.
In this class you will be working with pure olive oil, shea butter, coconut oil, aloe vera juice, a pre-mixed lye solution, green sea clay, fragrance oil and spinach powder.
What should you wear and bring? Please wear long sleeves and closed-toed shoes. For those with long hair, we recommend bringing a hair tie or that you come with your hair secured and away from your face. We will provide eye protection, gloves, aprons along with all materials and ingredients.
Payment must be received and waiver acknowledged prior to class participation. Students must be 16 years or older to participate. Making cold process soap involves working with sodium hydoxide and water (also known as lye), concentrated essential oils and electric stick blenders. In our workshop, safety is non-negotiable so it is mandatory you agree to follow our instructions. Failure to follow safety precautions or class rules and instructions could result in permanent injury and even death. Making soap from scratch is like driving a car. It is safe to do, but can be dangerous if you do not follow the specficied precautions and/or the class instructions.
